US Grade 4 - 7
In this ongoing writing class, we will explore different genres or topics each week. I will share the particular topic, (such as "flash fiction",) and then share an example from both a published author, and then a student. After that, I'll highlight some grammar and organization tips for that genre. The students will start writing, and then if they wish, they can share. I will also take the time look at their work to make edits and comments. It's a very hands on kind of experience. Topics that I will cycle through: Week of: November 7 Theme/Topic 1: Personal Narrative Week of: November 14 Theme/Topic 2: Fiction Week of: November 21 Theme/Topic 3: Literary Essays Week of: November 28 Theme/Topic 4: Free Verse Poems Week of: December 5 Theme/Topic 5: Opinion Essays Week of: December 12 Theme/Topic 6: Flash Fiction Week of: December 19 Theme/Topic 7: Memoir Week of: December 25 Theme/Topic 8: Humor Week of: January 2 Theme/Topic 9: Letter Writing Week of: January 9 Theme/Topic: Personal Narrative Week of: January 19 Theme/Topic: Fiction My teaching style is warm and supportive. I teach writing classes to K-12 students. The classes will cover many genres of writing, such as Personal Narrative, Fiction Writing, Essays, Poetry and more. Grammar and organization will also be an important part of these classes as well.
I have been teaching since 1992. I have taught all grades in and outside the traditional classroom. I have a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and a teaching credential from California State University East Bay.
My philosophy on teaching writing is that it first should be engaging and fun. Writing is a subject many people struggle with, and I want us to have enjoyable sessions while discussing possible topics and getting to know each other. I believe that students should be able to choose their own topics, with my help, when they need it. I will help to take the pain out of writing and help to students to enjoy the process.
I really love to read, and when I was a kid, my parents had a boat that we used to sail around the San Francisco Bay. My family would make fun of me because while we were on the boat, I'd read my books while my parents said I should be looking at the scenery. Today, I still love reading, but I also take time out to enjoy all the stuff around me as well.
