Class Experience

This is a class about feelings and emotions for young learners. It is a wonderful way to help children understand and express their inner experiences. This class is both engaging and educational, using a variety of activities to make the learning process fun and impactful. Here’s a detailed description of what my class looks like:

😊 Objective:
To help young learners identify, understand, and express their feelings and emotions in a healthy and constructive manner.

😢 Age Group:
Any child can benefit from learning and discussing emotions. I tailor the specific class to the learners enrolled. This is why I have very small class sizes. I recommend anywhere from the 3-12 age group.

🤨 Class Structure Example

1. Welcome and Introduction (5 minutes)
Greeting: We will start with a warm welcome and a brief introduction of the day's topic.
Ice-breaker Activity: We will use a simple game or song to help all children feel comfortable and engaged.

2. Story Time (15minutes)
Emotion-themed Story: We will read a short story that features characters experiencing a range of emotions. An example of a book I like for this is titled, "The Color Monster" by Anna Llenas.
Discussion: During the story, I will ask open-ended questions to encourage children to talk about the emotions the characters felt. For example, "How did the monster feel when it was happy?" or "What made the monster feel sad?"

3. Feelings Identification (10 minutes)
Emotion Slides: We will go through emotion slides with different facial expressions and I will ask the children to identify the emotion. The slides include happy, sad, angry, scared, and surprised faces.
Discussion: As we go through the colorful, engaging slides, we will discuss situations that make us feel big emotions. We will also discuss ideas on what we can do in these situations.

Learning Goals

By the end of this class, young learners will have a better understanding of their own emotions and the emotions of others. They will also have practical tools to express and manage their feelings in a positive way.
Identify Basic Emotions: Students should be able to recognize and name common emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and surprise.

Master's Degree in Psychology from Grand Canyon University
I studied psychology for many years and hold a graduate degree in the subject area. I also did non-clinical art therapy for several years, working with children ages 3-11. This profession forced me to be patient, artistic, and creative as we worked through feelings.

In our homeschool coop, we have a weekly emotions class where we focus on different emotions each week. I have been leading this for a few years and know that I have the experience and expertise to work with children on such a delicate topic.
