Homework
1-2 hours per week. The amount of practicing will vary depending on the level of the learner, and can be discussed with the teacher. Beginners should prepare to spend approximately 15-20 minutes, 3-5 days a week at their piano.Class Experience
Private piano lessons will be delivered based on the learner’s interests, possible past music experience, preferred learning style, and goals. Over the course of ongoing lessons, a variety of musical topics and skills will be covered including: * Technique (such as proper hand positioning, warm up scales/chords, performance strategies) * Songs from a variety of musical styles (such as classical music, contemporary, popular, etc) * Theory (note naming, rhythm, reinforcing what is learnt in songs) * Musical History (learning about Composers and styles of music from a wide variety of musical eras) * Ear Training ( playing songs by ear, melody playback games, clapbacks, chords) *Creativity (opportunities to create their own rhythms and their own songs) Each lesson will be unique in content, but may typically be structured as follows: * warm up (such as a scale, a chord progression, or a short song) that will be assigned as practicing material for the week. * 2-3 pieces will be taught and worked on each week, with the teacher giving guidance with how to begin the song, support with note reading and playing with the correct rhythm, and any other assistance that can support the learner as they learn the piece and work on it for the week. Songs may be worked on for a few weeks, or new songs may be assigned each week. * Last 5 minutes may be spent on Musical Theory or interactive activities. REFUND POLICY: -Please notify teacher at least 1 week/ 7 days ahead of class, if your child is unable to make their next lesson. My availability for teaching is limited, and my schedule won't allow for rescheduling or refunds, however a "video lesson recording" can be made for your child in the event they are sick or unable to attend class for any reason. PRACTICE PLANS: After each lesson, students or their families can request a "Practice Plan" if they find helpful, with tips on what to practice for the week. Please allow 24-48 hours after the class to attach their practice plan in the classroom. RECITALS: Twice per year (usually every December and June), students have the opportunity to participate in a group recital, where they are able to perform a song or two for a group of other learners. Recitals are always a highlight for learners, and are free of charge. PRACTICE COMMITMENT: Learning the piano requires consistent practice and consistent weekly lessons in order to progress. Families should be ready to help support their child in practicing 3-5 days per week, 15-20 minutes at a time. MATERIALS/BOOKS: No books are needed for the first 1-2 classes. After the first 1-2 classes, I will send a recommendation for books that would be a good fit. Often, learning will be based off of either the Piano Adventures book series, Alfred Premier Piano Course, or the Bastien series, which may be required to purchase. However before a learner’s first lesson, parents are encouraged to contact the teacher to discuss what books the learner has at home, prior music experience, etc to determine the best fit for a set of books! Typically, our first 1-2 classes are spent reviewing some basics without books. Some young learners (Ages 5-7yrs) may find it beneficial to have a parent or another adult near them to assist during their lessons. Please message me to schedule a time for weekly 25 minute lessons if there are no posted times that work for your schedule. Unfortunately, my teaching schedule is typically limited to weekday evenings and Saturdays. I will do my best to accomodate! Prior to signing up for ongoing lessons, a "one-time" lesson charged the same rate, can be scheduled to meet the teacher and determine if your learner is interested in weekly classes. Message me to schedule a one-time class! Every level, from beginner to advanced is welcome! No prior musical knowledge is required.
