US Grade 1 - 4
In this class, students will learn how to subtract with borrowing. Each class we will start by getting our brains warmed up by doing subtraction equations within 10, we will then use a place value chart to talk about the value of digits ( 1 ten = 10 ones). We will then do subtraction problems with and without borrowing on our place value chart. We will discuss how we know if we should borrow or not. We will then do a problem on the chart and the standard way side by side so the students can see how we are getting the answer that we get. We will solve problems together the standard way and then each student will get their own problem to solve on their own. Students will then explain step by step, how they solved their problem. Week of May 2nd: We will start with introduction then move on to getting our brains warmed up with subtraction fluency equations and place value. We will discuss how we know when we should borrow or not using the place value chart. We will then do some problems together and discuss the steps we need to take to solve the problems. Students will then work on problems on their own. Students may ask questions if they get stuck. Students will be asked to explain how they got their answers using math vocabulary. Week of May 9th: We will start with introduction then move on to getting our brains warmed up with subtraction fluency equations. We will discuss how we know when we should borrow or not using the place value chart. We will then do some problems together and discuss the steps we need to take to solve the problems. Students will then work on problems on their own. Students may ask questions if they get stuck. Students will be asked to explain how they got their answers using math vocabulary. Week of May 16th: We will start with introduction then move on to getting our brains warmed up with subtraction fluency equations and place value. We will discuss how we know when we should borrow or not using the place value chart. We will then do some problems together and discuss the steps we need to take to solve the problems. Students will then work on problems on their own. Students may ask questions if they get stuck. Students will be asked to explain how they got their answers using math vocabulary. Week of May 23rd: We will start with introduction then move on to getting our brains warmed up with subtraction fluency equations and place value. Students will then work on problems on their own. Students may ask questions if they get stuck. Students will be asked to explain how they got their answers using math vocabulary.
