Class Experience

In this class, children will learn a few exercises to breathe correctly for singing. Afterwards, we will move on to warm up the voice with some vocal exercises that will allow the kids to learn how to move the mouth properly to project a good sound, put in practice the breathing tips they learned earlier, and after that they will learn hand signs to sing scales. Later, we will practice and learn a couple of songs previously chosen by the teacher that follow the theme of the day. For example, if the theme is Frozen songs, we will learn the chorus of two of their songs that are easy to follow. They will take turns for the teacher to be able to hear each learner and give them feedback if needed.

Themed classes will go as follows:

Week 1 (March 7th): Movie Encanto songs.
Week 2 (March 14th): Movie Sing songs.
Week 3 (March 21st): Movie Trolls songs.
Week 4 (March 28th): Movie Frozen songs.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how the breathing process works in a very simple way. They will be aware of how the diaphragm feels when breathing in and out. They will practice singing some scales to get to know their voice, and learn to sing low, medium and high notes. Also, we will practice singing the diatonic scale with hand signs and train their ear and voice to sing a specific note of the scale.
While singing songs, they will be able to learn how to use their breathing and the correct shape of the mouth to sing well.

Parental Guidance
In this class kids will be asked to stretch a little for the breathing exercises, so it’s important to take this class in a room that allows them to move their arms freely, without hitting objects around them. Also, since they will be asked to sing, please make sure they will be in a place where they can sing with confidence and no interruptions.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will post links to the songs we will be learning each class a few days before so that kids get to listen to them and get familiar with what we will be singing.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Norma Segrera. I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I first started studying music at the age of 8 years old. I took 4 years of violin, followed by piano and vocal technique. I graduated from my music school in Colombia with a major in singing and popular vocal technique in 2001.
I was member for several years of the vocal group Legato - a choir where we sang religious music and Christmas carols.
In 2003, I started working at Gymboree Play and Music in Bogota. There I learned all about early childhood education and was one of the lead teachers in their program.
Later on I moved to the United States. In Florida I worked at School of Rock in Coral Springs as their singing teacher, and a couple of years later I became the Little Wing director. Little Wing is SoR’s music program for preschoolers.
In 2015 I moved to Maryland where I worked independently as a singing and piano teacher. Also, I created La Farfalla Music. La Farfalla specializes in musical entertainment for children’s birthday parties. I also created La Farfalla Do Re Mi - a music program designed to teach music to toddlers and preschoolers in a fun and dynamic way, where kids get to experience and explore music through dancing, singing, playing instruments and more.
