Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 2
Beginner Level
Please note that I am English, so the spelling I use with be British English spellings. This is fine for those just starting to read!

I taught my autistic son to read using a broadly Montessori approach. I worked in a school for children with Special Educational Needs for 6 years and many of the children in my class learned to read. I still remember their joy when they mastered this skill!

Your learner and I will work together to improve their reading and/or writing/recording.

I will start with an informal assessment of the learner's level.

Reading: I will work on phonics and blending with learners. Learners will 'sound out' letters and direct me how to spell words, then progress to writing the letters/words.
I will also teach High Frequency Words using words that are most common in English.
I use resources and games that I have discovered or developed myself when teaching students who are struggling to read.
I have written some stories to suit past learners interests and levels and can adjust them to suit your learner’s interests and needs.

Writing/Recording: I have worked with a number of learners who struggle to generate ideas for writing or who have wonderful ideas, but struggle to record these ideas efficiently. I have developed strategies to encourage students to generate ideas and to record their work.

Learning Goals

Students will be given strategies to use to decode and understand words and will become more confident about reading new and familiar words and sentences.
Students will become more confident about writing down or recording their own ideas.
