Class Experience

This is a 25 minute, ongoing class that will meet once a week for a total of 8 weeks to practice the basic skills of counting money, with emphasis on BOTH bills and coins. We will use mental math strategies to help with the counting process, use additional supports, such as a hundreds chart and scaffold according to each learner involved. Games, word problems, and much more will be explored in this class as students build their confidence and accuracy with using money. Come join us and don't hesitate to inquire about a different class time if needed.

Weekly Schedule of Learning and Topics (8 Sessions Total):

Section starting in September:

Week 1: How to identify coins and bills (coin and bill intro/review and history)
Week 2: How to skip count by 5's, 10's, and 25's
Week 3: GAME DAY with Word Problems (Kahoot)
Week 4: How to use a hundred's chart for to count coins and bills
Week 5: How to use the largest coin/bill first to count up to an amount
Week 6: How to make amounts less than $10 in multiple ways
Week 7: How to count money quickly using mental math strategies
Week 8: GAME DAY with Word Problems (Kahoot) - Celebrate our success this section!

Learning Goals

Students will receive ongoing explicit instruction and guided practice with counting bills and coins. We will practice role playing as if in real-life job situations, and what to do if they want to make a purchase as a customer with cash and how to count money in picture form.

Supply List
-Play or real U.S. Money (At least the following: 10 pennies, 5 nickels, 5 dimes, 4 quarters, 5 $1 bills, 5 $5 bills, 5 $10 bills, 1 $20) These materials can easily be found by downloading printable counterfeit money for learning from online sources.
-Pencil with an eraser
-Notebook Paper
-Hundreds Chart printable (I will post this in the classroom prior to each meeting!)
