Description
Class Experience
Karen's fun, interactive small group reading class will practice phonics skills and apply the skills to decode multisyllable words. Phonics skills include letter sounds, digraphs/trigraphs, word families, rhyming and rule breakers. Learners will read illustrated, high interest sentences and stories aloud together, and individually, with my assistance. We will review high-frequency word lists. Students will learn phonics skills and apply them to decode multisyllable words: letter sounds, digraphs/trigraphs, word families, rhyming, silent e rules, rule breakers, syllable work. We will review Dolch sight words and other high-frequency words. Picture clues and other comprehension strategies will be taught. Basic language arts, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, spelling, computer skills, and social skills are covered in the context of reading and responding to stories.
I love to empower learners by helping them improve reading skills! Reading opens a whole new world to children. I have been teaching reading skills for over 20 years in a variety of home and school settings, including successful virtual reading classes. I have a collection of lesson plans and rich stories to interest and motivate readers. There's nothing like the look of satisfaction on a young reader's face after sounding out a difficult word!
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
