This is an ongoing class where a new spelling and/or phonics rule will be taught each week. The class will begin with a short lesson on the skill for the day. Then, students will practice spelling and reading words that follow that rule. These classes do not necessarily build upon one another. You can miss a class and still be successful with the skill for that day since a new skill is taught each week. Students will practice the new skill through an interactive lesson, video clips, hands-on activities, and repetition. These activities may include spelling words on phoneme boards (or boxes), reading sentences and finding the correct word (based on the similar spellings) to complete the sentence, spelling words seen in pictures, reading words and determining if the word matches the picture, etc. all while applying the knowledge of the skill that was taught. Other Details
Supply List
There will be handouts for each class. These will change from week to week. However, I will always want the students to have a dry erase page of phoneme boxes like the one I have attached below. This will be an option every week to help sound out and spell words.
1 file available upon enrollment
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade teacher for many years so I know the importance of sounding out, spelling, and blending words and applying this knowledge to read and spell successfully. I know how difficult it can be for students to remember spelling and phonics rules. I will use proven strategies to help each student be a better reader and speller.
