LEARNING SESSIONS: This class will FOCUS on READING COMPREHENSION Students will experience group instruction with a combination of reading, writing, vocabulary, and the application of skills. In addition, students can expect independent and group interactions with the teacher and classmates. Students may unmute to ask questions and to ask for clarification. In addition, I ask the students to keep the chat open for any lesson-related questions and comments. Each session will have a variation of the following agenda: ~ I will review vocabulary words and footnotes that are related to the passage ~ I will review the reading comprehension questions before we read (test-taking strategy) ~ We will all take turns reading the passage (I usually go in alphabetical order) ~ I will be annotating the story and discussing important plot events as we read (I screen share from my iPad) ~ We will answer the reading comprehension questions (the learners will send me their responses through the private chat) Note; reading and discussion can sometimes reduce the number of questions that we complete during our session. Students are welcome to complete any unfinished questions after class and are encouraged to send me their responses for feedback. WRITTEN RESPONSES (short answers - NOT essays) ~ This is a READING class. Please note any writing in this course is in the form of a briefly guided literary response and is based on the content of the reading passage. ~ Any written responses that were not completed in class may be submitted for feedback after class. ~ This is NOT a formal writing course with direct writing and grammar instruction of mechanics and structure. AFTER CLASS You can expect a summary of the lesson, an uploaded copy of the annotated text that was used during the session, and access to the class video. DISCLAIMER: Video Access Outschool teachers reserve the right to withhold access to the class video. As per Outschool policy, this will occur if Outschool or the teacher still needs to verify a learner on camera. In addition, I may withhold a class video if a learner or parent violates security protocol. Please know that these situations are very rare. REFUNDS: A Courteous Reminder Your subscription is holding your seat and does not allow others to enroll in your spot. Please do not request a refund for missed classes. All enrolled learners that have been verified will have access to the materials and class video. Upon request, I may be able to transfer you to another section in order to make up a missed class.
Learning Goals
~ To improve reading comprehension, develop analysis, and nurture higher-order thinking.
~ To provide a safe and comfortable learning space for all learners.
~ All multiple-choice and written responses are submitted privately in the chat. This allows me to manage the learning needs of the students and to provide remediation and guidance as needed.
~ I will encourage building fluency and confidence by calling on students to help me read the passage aloud. However, students that prefer not to read aloud are safe with me. Students may send a private message to me in the chat and ask me not to call on them during requests for reading aloud. Note, I will call on everyone unless the parent or student specifies not to call on them.
