Homework
1 hour per week. Ideally, beginners should practice a little each day, about 10 to 20 minutes. I understand that sometimes that may not happen! As students progress and the music becomes more complex, they will need to spend more time in practice. It's better to practice a little each day than in large chunks once or twice a week.

Class Experience

We will meet weekly for a one-on-one piano lesson, focusing on learning to read music. In addition to the typical skills like technique, theory, and ear training, I also like to incorporate improvisation, composition, performance confidence, and bits of music history! Learning music can be colorful, fun, and adventurous when students have opportunities to create and explore, so I delight in integrating these small activities into the lesson to supplement instruction.

Here is an example of a typical lesson for a beginner:
1. Review the assigned pieces from the previous week; troubleshoot any issues together.
2. Introduce the next piece in the book; investigate the score for any new rhythms, notes, symbols, or concepts.
3. Game or activity to practice rhythm, a prompt for improvisation, learn about a composer, hear a short performance, letter name review, theory challenge, explore sounds on the piano, technical exercises, etc. ---depending on what would motivate and help this particular student. I make a lot of my own music games, and incorporate these often to keep the lesson engaging!

With beginners, I use the Supersonics Method books. (See links to purchase under "Learner Supply List"). If you have taken piano lessons previously using different books, we might continue in those for awhile until we get to a good entry point to transition to the Supersonics series.

Supply List
