Advanced Level
This ongoing course is designed for one of these three types of students: 1. Students who have taken our introductory curriculum and want to be with an older age group of students. 2. High school students new to debate who have or have not taken our introductory curriculum. 3. High school students who have debate experience and are looking for help with a tournament. This ongoing course will have students participate in mini-debates each week to teach the fundamentals and allow advanced students to practice arguments they are seeking to finetune. Students who have not debated before will have the ability to both watch and participate in the debates. After each debate, feedback on how to improve will be given with the goal of improving upon those areas in future rounds and weeks. Students will also improve upon their research, notetaking, and listening abilities through requiring students to participate in feedback process as well. Depending one the week topics will be assigned ahead of time (CHECK THE CLASSROOM PAGE FOR DETAILS UPON JOINING) or will be done impromptu to improve on your feet thinking and to compliment other lesson plans to work on specific skills. Students who are looking for help with tournament preparation will be able to have input on directing the topic selection for the week. Students can join this course at anytime since each week focuses on a unique stand alone lesson plan geared to get students engaged and interacting with one another. ***If you are joining a class that has started previously, please look through the classroom's feed for the topic we'll be debating in the upcoming class. If you come prepared, you'll immediately start debating if you feel comfortable. If you aren't prepared, or aren't comfortable, we'll have you judge and do an impromptu activity your first week.*** The first five weeks the class will meet will cover the following lessons. Again, each class is standalone so students can join at anytime and lesson plans will always be modified to fit the students who attend that week. Week 1: Introductions, Ice Breakers, Debate Games Week 2: Learning to Research, Topic Ideas, Debate Games Week 3: Formal Debates on Topics Week 4: Formal Debates on Topics Week 5: Debate Games and Speech Redos Week 6: Formal Debates and Debate Games
