What Will Be Taught? Our class focuses on teaching game design and basic coding principles through Roblox Studio, an intuitive game development platform. Students will learn the fundamentals of programming using Lua, a scripting language, while creating their own games. Topics Covered: Introduction to Roblox Studio: Navigating the interface and understanding its tools. Basic Programming Concepts: Variables, loops, conditionals, and functions in Lua. Game Design Fundamentals: Planning game mechanics, storytelling, and user interface design. Project Development: Building and refining game projects, from simple puzzles to more complex adventures. Collaborative Skills: Working in teams, sharing ideas, and providing constructive feedback. Online Safety: Understanding safe and responsible use of online platforms. Class Structure: The class is structured to balance learning and hands-on practice. Each session is divided into: Direct Teaching (30%): Brief, focused lessons on specific concepts using slides and live coding demonstrations. Interactive Learning (40%): Hands-on activities where students apply what they've learned in Roblox Studio. Collaboration and Discussion (20%): Group discussions, brainstorming sessions, and peer-to-peer learning. Feedback and Reflection (10%): Time for students to present their work and receive feedback. Teaching Style: Engaging and Supportive: I strive to create an environment where students feel excited to learn and safe to experiment and make mistakes. Adaptive: Recognizing that each student learns differently, I adjust my approach to cater to varying skill levels and interests. Interactive: I believe in learning by doing, so I encourage a lot of hands-on practice and experimentation. Interaction with Learners: Lectures & Demonstrations: Explaining new concepts and showcasing them through live demonstrations. Interactive Games & Challenges: To reinforce learning and make the class enjoyable. Group Discussions: Encouraging students to share their ideas and learn from each other. One-on-One Time: Personalized attention during class to address individual questions or challenges. Project Feedback: Constructive feedback on students’ projects, emphasizing their strengths and areas for improvement. Materials and Permissions: All materials used in the class are either created by me or properly licensed for educational use. Roblox Studio is a free platform, and I ensure that all our practices comply with their terms of use and best practices for educational purposes. This comprehensive approach ensures that each learner not only grasps the basics of coding and game design but also develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative skills. My goal is to make each class an exciting journey into the world of game development, sparking a lasting interest in technology and creativity.
