Description
Class Experience
This English Language Arts class is an opportunity for young people to practise their writing with close guidance and feedback, from understanding and enhancing knowledge of good sentence structure, to formulating their ideas in various essay formats. Every class will be learner-directed, so students can bring in their own materials for us to workshop with their peers as a group. In each meeting, activities will be provided based on learner need that week, from grammar activities to writing...
To improve a learner's confidence in their writing ability and in their communication skills.
Ms. Shiren has an Honours Bachelors Degree from the University of Toronto, where she practised essay writing for the social sciences throughout her degree, in both English and Spanish. She has written for community magazines in her home city of Toronto, and also worked as a copyeditor. She has taught and tutored English from young people through to adults, in the forms of English as a Second Language, Vocabulary Development, and Essay Writing and other Writing Practice. She has long-term clients who continue to grow with her as their writing continues to develop over time.
A personal notebook is recommended so students can review progress and take class notes. Some budding writers may want to consider their own "writing folder" to collect their writing.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Assessment is informal and integral to the development of the student in each class.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
