Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this ongoing collaborative narrative writing workshop, students will work with their peers to create a descriptive story containing all the parts of a narrative.
For the first 15 minutes of each class, students will go over the basic parts of a sentence, including nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs. Students will give examples of each, and an emphasis will be put on writing descriptive sentences for the narrative.
For the second 15 minutes of each class, students will learn about the parts of narrative including the plot, characters, dialogue, point of view, setting, theme or moral, and conflict.
For the third 15 minutes of each class, students will decide on each of the elements to structure the narrative, and the teacher will type these out in a document on a shared screen for all to see.
For the fourth 15 minutes of each class, each student will get a chance to help write a narrative as a class while the teacher types what is dictated for the students to see on a shared screen. Each student will get a turn to ensure equal input.
At the end of class, the teacher will post the finished story on the classroom page for students to download if they wish.

Due to the ongoing nature of this class, each week will have the same structure with different outcome's because of student creativity. Learners are welcome to join at any time, as the ongoing nature of this class allows new learners at any point.

Week 1: (9/1) This week the narrative will be written from a first-person point of view.
Week 2: (9/8) This week the narrative will be written from a third-person limited point of view.
Week 3: (9/15) This week the narrative will be written from an omniscient point of view.
Week 4: (9/22) This week the narrative will be written from a point of view chosen by the students.
This pattern will continue to repeat for all consecutive weeks.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! Thank you for sharing this time with me! My name is Mrs. Bloom, and I love teaching kids! My goal is to allow my students to experience learning hands on, and to encourage them to think and express themselves in a positive way. With over 20 years of experience working with kids in multiple capacities, including volunteering at camps, running kids programs, working as a teacher, and raising and homeschooling my own child, I have a huge variety of experiences from which I can pull to create fun and engaging classes for my students! Since we are expected to integrate information from multiple areas when we approach a problem in real life, my classes are taught from this interdisciplinary perspective. This allows students to ask questions, explore, and discover information that is interesting and relevant, motivating them to become lifelong learners. I can't wait for you to join me as we enjoy the art of learning!
