Ongoing Advanced Splits: Stretching & Flexibility Splits Focused (Ages 9-13)

This ongoing class is designed for students who already have their splits and would like to take their flexibility to the next level! Perfect for gymnasts, dancers, figure skaters, cheerleaders, or anyone wanting to improve flexibility.

Class Experience

In this weekly stretching session, we will work on improving flexibility beyond just the splits. This class is designed for students who already have their splits (or are close to their splits) and would like some more advanced stretching time. We will learn how to work our split skills in a healthy and safe progression. I will be stretching right along with the learners to show the proper stretching techniques. 

We will be doing all three splits, left, right, and center, as well as, a variety of other stretches to work on flexibility in our major muscle groups. 

Flexibility is something that develops over time with practice, but having a weekly time dedicated to stretching can really boost stretching ability! 

Each day we will start with a 5-10 minute warm-up to make sure that our muscles are warm before stretching. We will discuss the importance of a warm-up and how to stretch safely without causing injury. 

Following the warm-up, we will spend 15 minutes on the floor stretching our splits. We will spend 5 minutes in each split (left, right, and center) If students already have their splits down comfortably we will start working over split! This is also a great time for us to chat and get to know each other during class while we are hanging out in the splits for a while. 

The last 5-10 minutes of class will be focused on general stretching and stretching other major muscle groups like the back, shoulders, hips, etc.

Week 3: Over-splits and hamstring flexibility
Week 4: Over-splits and ankle and wrist flexibility

Learning Goals
Students will learn the proper stretches and techniques to improve their flexibility and work on their over-splits. Splits don't happen overnight, but students will learn the techniques to practice safely on their own after class time.

Parental Guidance
Stretching should be done in an open room with space to move around and stretch on the floor without running into any furniture. We will be discussing safe stretching in class but students should be encouraged to go slowly and work on their splits little by little to prevent injury.
Supply List
You will want to have space in your house on the floor where you have room to stretch without running into any furniture. 
Carpeting is fine, or if you have a hard floor I recommend laying down a yoga mat or something softer to stretch on. 
If your student is ready for over-splits they will need a yoga block, box, or a couple of books to prop their leg up for splits. I will discuss this in more detail in class! 
Please wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in to class. Leggings or sweatpants are a great choice!

I was a competitive gymnast for over 10 years, and have coached gymnastics on and off for the last 8 years. It's something I love and am very passionate about! With the pandemic, I am not currently coaching in a gym, so I am so excited to get some stretching time with Learners on Outschool!
