Beginner - Intermediate Level
This class is for 6th and 7th grade students to learn writing, reading, vocabulary, and grammar skills. Each week will have a specific focus related to 6th and 7th grade ELA standards that will engage students. Texts will be high-interest 6th and 7th grade reading level. My goal is to make learning FUN but also appropriately challenging. Students will be encouraged to participate, answer questions, and share their thinking in an encouraging atmosphere. Please let me know if your learner prefers not to be called upon. Some weeks will include graphic organizers, grade-appropriate texts, and other handouts that will be posted in the classroom. Students are encouraged to bring a pencil and notebook to class to allow for brainstorming, writing, and other activities. This is an ongoing class and students can come and go as they need! With writing assignments, students will receive individualized and detailed feedback on each assignment. This is an enrichment class and can be used to sharpen ELA skills. Week of Sept 2 - Nonfiction text with a focus on vocabulary, main idea and supporting details (graphic organizer included) Week of Sept 9 - Write an informational essay. Students will have several choices. (graphic organizer included) Week of Sept 16 - Poetry: We will analyze various poems and write a literary response Fiction text with a focus on vocabulary and character traits / development (graphic organizer included) Week of Sept 23 - Fiction text with a focus on vocabulary and character traits / development (graphic organizer included) ! Week of Sept 30 - Nonfiction text with a focus on text structure and author's purpose. First class is reading and the second class is completing a writing response using text evidence. Week of Oct 7 - Write a personal narrative. Students will write a personal narrative and guidance on developing their ideas, organization, and including the various elements of a narrative in their writing (graphic organizer included). Week of Oct 14 - Fiction text with a focus on point of view and how the point of view shapes how events are described Week of Oct 21 - Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text. Write a persuasive argument. Week of Oct 28 - Descriptive writing using sensory details (show, not tell) Week of Nov 4th - Analyzing theme and how the theme is developed in a text Week of Nov 11th - Synthesizing information between two texts *Topics will be updated weekly
