Description

Class Experience

In this session, a student and I will be working on their writing to help take their writing to the next level. The student will need to submit a sample of their work before class (unless I have a sample of their work from a previous writing class that they have taken with me.) If the student brings a creative writing piece to the session, our discussion will focus on:
1. Having a clear beginning, middle and ending to a story
2. Writing a clear climax in the story
3. Creating dynamic and static characters
4. Designing an engaging setting that utilizes the reader's five senses to help the story come alive
5. Incorporating descriptive details (Examples: personification, similes, synonyms, adjectives) to add an additional level to the student's writing.
6. Writing the story in one tense (Past, present or future.)

If the student is bringing a book report or book summary to the session then our discussion will focus on:
1. Identifying the sequence of events in the story (beginning, middle and ending)
2. Clarifying and classifying the details of the story that are essential to the report or summary
3. Using transition words (first, next, then, and then and finally) to the report/summary in order to add fluency to the report/summary.

If the student needs, I can also cover:
- Cause and Effect
- Text Structure
- Point of View
- Identifying past and present tense
As a teacher, I have held various reading and writing clubs for children of all ages. I have also conducted reading and writing interventions in order to improve students' reading and writing abilities. I have three reading courses on Outschool (Improving Reading Comprehension of Fictional Works, Improving Reading Comprehension of Nonfiction Texts, Learning to Summarize, Summarizing Short Stories and an Introduction to Poetry.) I also teach three writing courses on Outschool (Creative Writing, Writing a Personal Narrative and Writing an Informative Essay.)
Per parent permission (based on whether or not they believe the student' schedule can handle it) additional practice may be assigned to the student to complete after class in order to gain further knowledge and practice of the concepts discussed during the session.
The student will be assessed based on their participation in class and practice of the assigned activities.
30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
