Homework
The only homework for this course is practice. Progress is cumulative. Practicing for shorter time spans, more frequently, will allow you to build upon what you have learned. I know schedules get very busy. Only you will know what works best for your family!Assessment
Students typically progress to new material when they show a basic understanding of the material taught and can play the current material without assistance and with few mistakes.Class Experience

Welcome to beginning private piano lessons! I am excited at the prospect of teaching your young musician! In this course, we will be learning the basics of piano playing. This includes proper posture, fingering positions, key identification, note names and values. We will also play a variety of games to help with finger dexterity, learning notes names and practicing rhythms. I like the Alfred Basic Piano Library - All in One Series and will most likely recommend it. However, if you are already working from another book, I can adjust to meet your student at their current placement. I tailor each lesson to meet the specific needs of your student. Thus, I may use supplemental materials to help your child gain a greater understanding of the concepts and material being taught. Since this is a class for young beginners, a parent or helper may need to assist in the initial setup for this class (please see parental guidance). No experience is necessary for this course. However, if your student has had prior lessons, please message me ahead of time and bring materials to the first class so that we can determine the proper starting point for our lessons. During each session, your child can expect to review previous concepts, play the assigned pieces, receive feedback and possibly play a game (if time allows) to strengthen the understanding of the concepts being taught. Please note - If you don't see a time that works for you, feel free to check the time slots on my other private lessons and email me if another time works for you.

Parental Guidance
For young learners, I recommend that a parent or helper assist in the initial setup before class (identifying Middle C with a sticker, identifying right/left hands, camera placement if you have an overhead mount).
Supply List
We will most likely be using the Alfred's Basic Piano Library - All In One Series, which can be found on Amazon. However, please wait until after our first class to purchase your book, so I recommend a book that I feel is most appropriate for your child. If you have had previous lessons, please bring some music that you have already worked on, so we can determine an appropriate book and starting point. If you have already purchased or are currently using a different book, please message me and we'll figure out how we want to proceed. Other materials needed for class: pencil scrunchie, hair tie or watch to help determine right from left (optional) sticker for marking Middle C overhead camera/phone mount (highly recommended as it allows me to see your student's hands)

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, my name is Laura Key. Throughout my life, I have had a passion for music! Many of my earliest memories involve singing in the station wagon, listening to classical music on my Care Bear radio, dancing while my mom played Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay on our organ and playing the same songs over and over... to the point of my dad joking that he would send me to the circus! Music plays an integral part of our lives! It affects our moods, brings back memories and is the sound track for our special and even small moments!
In May of 2000, I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music from Maryville University. I formerly taught music for grades K-8. As a music teacher, I proudly brought recorders to the stage at our annual Christmas concerts and also introduced the school to swing dancing, line dancing and square dancing! I am currently returning to the work world after staying at home with my three beautiful children. This transition has led me to teaching private piano lessons for the last two years out of my home... and thanks to COVID, now through ZOOM! I'm learning as I go, but I have never been afraid to take on a new challenge!
As far as my teaching, I have actually learned a great deal by being a stay-at-home mom. My children are twice gifted (gifted and ADHD), which has truly helped me to realize that each child is unique and learns at their own pace. Some children may need more help, a slower pace or a faster pace. That is ok. I tailor each lesson directly to what your student needs; not a one-size-fits-all approach.
As for my other interests, I love sharing my passions with my kids and husband! We are a scouting family (I am a girl scout troop leader). We love to go camping, hiking, star gazing and traveling. I also love catching little critters in our backyard with my kids! I'm into photography, swing dancing, gardening and cooking. Basically, if it involves music, nature or some other form of art....and of course, family time, I'm in!
I hope to have the opportunity to share my passions with you and bring music to life for your family! Please look for my beginning and intermediate piano lessons, as well as my beginning recorder classes.
