What's included

5 live meetings
4 hrs 35 mins in-class hours
Homework
2-4 hours per week. Homework will be driven by student need for the duration of this writing intensive. Learners will need significant time to develop their written piece. Writing is time-intensive for the most part; therefore, it is strongly suggested that students spend additional time at home developing their paragraphs.
Assessment
This class will not be assessed; however, frequent feedback during class discussions will provide all learners a chance to understand their level of proficiency

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
This course is designed to move a student from the paragraph-writing stage to a finished multi-paragraph piece, although student results will vary depending upon writing speed, experience and length of piece.
Successful students will have previous experience writing one well-written paragraph independently or with assistance.

Each class will follow this rough schedule:
First 5-10 minutes: students briefly share their favorite writing either by themselves or a favorite author
Second 5 -10 minutes: I will share a good example of fiction or non-fiction writing with class discussion
Third 10-15 minutes: Explicit instruction in a writing technique
Fourth 20 minutes: Individual check-in between me and each student to check on progress and provide assistance. Students not having 1:1 instructional time will work on their written piece during this time
Last 5 minutes: Student share

The instructional schedule will be as follows:
Monday
Planning: "W" words, word choice and outline
Assignment

Tuesday
Paragraph organization: hook, details, conclusion

Wednesday
Paragraph transition: words and techniques

Thursday
Character development and dialogue

Friday
Thesaurus: why and when
Proper editing by self and peers
Learning Goals
By the end of this writing intensive, students will have an understanding of the writing process, create their own work, and learn to respectfully provide feedback to their peers
