Homework Offered
Twenty minutes of reading—with a grown-up! During class, I will ask the learner to show a book of their choosing. The homework is then to read the book together with a grown-up. The goal is to instill a lifelong love of reading in children, best achieved when they make a daily habit of reading with their favorite people. During my early literacy training at the public library, I learned an incredible fact: If a grownup reads to a child every day for just 20 minutes — basically one book a day — the child will hear 1.8 million words in one year. Therefore, Ms. Christina wants each learner to read together with a grown-up every day, a book of their choice in any language — it can even be the same book every day! Then read that book to a pet or stuffed animal so the child can practice without pressure, and even pretend to be the teacher. How fun! Not only will this daily reading habit expose the learner to an incredible number of words, it will instill in them a lifelong love of reading. With reading being the cornerstone of all subsequent learning, the daily reading habit is the simplest, least expensive way to set your child up for a lifetime of success and joy.
Assessments Offered
Grades Offered
Learners should bring a shaker (rattle, shaky egg, maraca, or canister with dried rice, beans, or beads inside) and one book they love—any book in any language.
Please be available to "unmute" your learner for their turn to speak, if they cannot "unmute" themselves. Bonus: Model good classroom behavior from just off-camera. If your child sees you moving and singing along, they will be more willing to too.
You are encouraged to visit your public library regularly and allow your child to select any books they like in any language in any format, including picture books, chapter books, graphic novels, audiobooks, and e-books.
