Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 8
This class offers individually tailored one on one reading fluency instruction and a corresponding writing activity. It also acts as a trial session for my weekly sessions if you would like to meet me.

I’ll start our session by exposing your student to the top one hundred new words at their grade level. (The Fry word list or "instant words" are widely accepted to contain the most used words in reading and writing.)

I will time them on this list four times (25 words at a time) while providing tailored feedback and fluency tips.

I will report the results back to you in the classroom and attach a pdf of the one hundred words. Your student will be encouraged to engage with the list for homework in order to beat their previous score. In addition, we will conduct some writing exercises and practice putting a few challenging new words into sentences.

My top priority is to find out what interests young readers and increase their skill base, all while having fun. Most of all, I hope they feel like they have a supportive and enthusiastic reading coach along the way. To help students feel at ease, short talking breaks and friendly activities will be sprinkled throughout our intense session together. Trained and certified in both special education and talented/gifted education, I know growth in reading can be stressful for students of all abilities. Students will leave the session with clear goals, exercises, and reading tasks that can easily be communicated with parents.

(This is a great way to try one session with me to see if I am a good fit for your student. Scheduling concerns? Please message about creating an ongoing private session for your specific student. Communication is the key to helping your student. We'll be in touch!)

I spent years as a public school teacher providing specialized reading services to middle school students. I've enjoyed utilizing technology-based learning management systems to administer academic material and academic tests online. In addition, I've served as a co-teacher in mainstream ELA classes and constructed instructional plans for individual student needs.

I've also served as a K-8 enrichment coordinator/talented and gifted coach, implementing various assessment strategies while providing specific feedback on student work. In addition, I have extensive experience working with Davidson Young Scholars in the profoundly gifted population and with learners who identify as twice-exceptional.

Regardless of student ability, my passion is implementing modifications and accommodations for comprehensive support of student needs related to reading and writing. - Michelle Ptacek
