Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 5
The aim for this one time class is to awaken a sense of excitement, joy and discovery of the natural world. This is a sample class of an ongoing Nature Study Class/Group.

At the beginning of the lesson the students will share what they have observed around their home and community. Animals, plants, weather. They can also share animals, plants etc. that they are passionate about.

We will observe photos and videos of a Barn Owl and Great Horned Owl. I will offer additional information by way of guided questions that encourage further observation. I will also offer additional information on both types of owls including habitat, mating habits, eating behaviors. We will create a nature journal entry.

I will dissect an owl pellet in class and encourage students to identify what animal this owl had eaten.

Students may purchase their own dissection kit to follow along with the in class dissection or they can just observe. (no mess, no smell!)

After class activities include:
*creating a nest using materials from their yard.
*creating an owl nesting box from one plank of wood.
*create additional nature journal entries from what they observe in their neighborhoods. Even in the busiest of cities nature can be observed.
*read more fiction/non fiction about owls
Learning Goals
Students will develop the foundational science skills of observation, questioning and recording.
Students will develop the skill of research as they look for information about their natural observations.
Students will also develop artistic skills as they draw what they see in nature.

I have been a Charlotte Mason homeschool teacher for many years. It is our preferred method of learning. It is meant to inspire and give learners skills, tools and a desire to know more about the world around them. Charlotte Mason teachers "spread the feast" and allow students to take what nourishes them.
