US Grade 2 - 5
Intermediate Level
This 30 minute one time class based on an ongoing class. The aim is for students to experience what a "Learning Grammar Through Literature" class is like. Together our class will read a short passage from "Mary Poppins" by P.L. Travers. Then the hunt begins! We will use a Google document and the annotation tools to mark the passage. If students would like a hard copy they may also print the passage via a link that is available upon enrollment. *We will discuss any unfamiliar vocabulary. *We will look at tricky spellings. *We will discuss mechanics of writing: contractions, capitalization, homonyms, homophones, antonyms, similes sentence types, dialogue, punctuation. *We will examine the passage and look for the 8 basic parts of speech, learning about them as we go. *We will learn about the parts of the sentence and locate them. *We will learn about phrases and clauses and look for them in our passage. Please note: Students are not expected to read the book prior to class. It is my hope that they will be eager to do so afterward, though! Why learn grammar? Knowing the grammar of our language helps us to become better speakers. Knowing grammar helps us to become proficient writers. Understanding grammar helps us to comprehend more accurately what has been read. Studying grammar is an exercise in problem solving.
