Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This is a one semester Anatomy and Physiology course.

This class will meet once per week with homework/quizzes/worksheets/videos due outside of class each week.

We will be following an open source textbook that students will have free access to OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2nd Edition. Students will also have assigned reading throughout the week.

Due to the nature of the course, students should be aware that images presented in the course are going to be real organs from humans and animals. (We will be viewing real dissected organ images during our course). These will come from the textbook and are scientific images from the textbook publisher.

We will cover all the major organ systems at a high school level. Students will gain understanding of each organ system and how they work together. We will go into each organ system and learn the fundamentals while also finding real world applications.

The semester will have a final exam that covers the topics in that we learned over the previous weeks.

Week 1-2: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

Week 1: Overview of the course, introduction to basic anatomical terminology, and the organization of the human body.
Week 2: Introduction to cell structure and function, including cell organelles and their roles in cellular processes.

Week 3-4: Skeletal System

Week 3: Anatomy of the skeletal system, including bones, joints, and cartilage.
Week 4: Functions of the skeletal system, bone types, bone growth, and disorders of the skeletal system.

Week 5-6: Muscular System

Week 5: Anatomy of muscles, muscle types, and muscle tissue organization.
Week 6: Muscle contraction, muscle mechanics, and common muscular system disorders.

Week 7-8: Nervous System

Week 7: Anatomy of the nervous system, including the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system, and the structure of neurons.
Week 8: Nerve impulses, synapses, neurotransmitters, and disorders of the nervous system.

Week 9-10: Cardiovascular System

Week 9: Anatomy of the cardiovascular system, including the heart, blood vessels, and blood composition.
Week 10: Blood circulation, cardiac cycle, blood pressure regulation, and common cardiovascular disorders.

Week 11-12: Respiratory System and Digestive System

Week 11: Anatomy of the respiratory system, including the structure and function of the lungs, airways, and gas exchange.
Week 12: Anatomy of the digestive system, including the organs involved in digestion, nutrient absorption, and digestive disorders.

Week 13-14: Endocrine System and Review

Week 13: Anatomy of the endocrine system, including endocrine glands, hormones, and their functions.
Week 14: Review of the semester

Learning Goals

Upon completion of this full year course of Anatomy and Physiology, students will have a strong understanding of all the major physiological systems of the body as well as all major anatomical structures.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I am Dr. K!

I have a PhD in Chemistry. I have over 10 years of teaching experience with both children and adults! I have taught thousands of classes in Biology, Chemistry, and some in between (Biochemistry, Ecology, etc).

My biggest philosophy behind teaching is making every concept applicable to the things around us. We can read a textbook and learn about atoms and bonds, but relating that to real world concepts is how we will really grasp the concepts in my classes.
