Reading Tutoring With Mrs. Leslie
One-On-One Tutoring With Mrs. B: Let’s Read Your Chapter Book!
Class experience
Don’t we all want our children to love reading? Yet reading a chapter book is much different than reading fact books, comic books, and graphic novels. Sometimes we take it for granted that kids will magically recognize the constructs, nuances, and writing techniques in a chapter book, but, truthfully, almost every young learner can benefit from specific guidance on how to "ace" a chapter book! This class is taught in English.
Learners will: -view themselves as good readers -recognize the key differences of how a chapter book is set up compared to other reading material -practice reading out loud and sounding out tricky words -practice reading out loud fluently and with some expression -practice reading out loud paying attention to punctuation and paragraphs -pause at intervals to ask themselves key questions for comprehension(what is the setting, what just happened, who are the main characters, what point of view is the story told from, do I need to go back to re-read?) -recognize and practice strategies of good reading such as: predicting, making a movie in one’s head, asking "I wonder why" questions, inferring, summarizing, re-reading, making personal connections
I am a career English Language Arts Teacher and have taught reading for over 25 years. I am known for being encouraging and passionate about whatever chapter book I am reading from, which has translated into my students feeling excited about reading chapter books too! I am a veteran at modelling good reading behaviors specific to chapter books for children to observe. It's been my pleasure to inspire hundreds, if not thousands, of learners to love reading chapter books!
Learners should bring a chapter book to the session and I will have the same chapter book as well. I am happy to suggest novels prior to class.
Parents, I will communicate with you through the Outschool message tabs prior to each session. We will decide what chapter book will be used in the tutoring session and if there are any specific skills you would like me to focus on with your child. I will also communicate how your child is doing after each meeting.
Dear Outschool Friends, I can hardly wait for you to join me and your fellow learners in the excitement of learning! Allow me to introduce myself: I’m Rhonda Bryerton, The Book Club Teacher, and you can call me Mrs. B. It has been the honor of my...
