Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Does your child learn best as the only student? Are you looking to beat the reading summer lag? Or maybe your student needs a little extra support!

As a certified Reading Specialist, I have experience teaching the top reading programs and I can differentiate and personalize a reading lesson just for your learner.

When enrolling in this class, I will send you a reading interest survey for your student to fill out and an academic background survey for the parent/guardian to fill out. This will help me know where to start our lesson.

In a typical tutoring session, parents/guardians can expect the following structure for their learner:
1. 5-7 minutes of interactive phonemic awareness/phonics skills-
*Mrs. Terlau will use research from Wiley Blevins and Patricia Cunningham to make sure the phonics skills fit within your
learner's academic level. Phonics topics vary by age/level, but may include; short vowels, long vowels, r-controlled vowels,
            digraphs, complex consonants, etc.
2. 5-10 minutes of fluency practice-
*students will practice fluency words, phrases or passages. This will be indicated with the help of the academic background
survey. A practice sheet will be sent to parent/guardian for practice at home.
3. Comprehension practice-
*Mrs. Terlau will use the combination of student's interest survey and academic background survey to create a
comprehension lesson that is personalized for your learner. Mrs. Terlau will begin the comprehension portion, but will send
a practice graphic organizer for students to finish the book or passage at home. Examples of comprehension topics coverd may
include; asking and answering questions, summarizing, sequencing, finding evidence, comparing and contrasting, cause and
           effect, etc)

**This tutoring session can be personalized to best fit your student's needs!
At the end of the tutoring session, Mrs. Terlau will write feedback to the parent or guardian about how the student's session went.
