1-2 hours per week. Students will be required to complete unfinished class assignments for homework. Multiple stories will be read, outlined, and rewritten with stylistic techniques. The final assignment must be typed double spaced time New Roman #12 font. Amount of time spent writing and rewriting a story will depend on the student. However, I estimate 1-2 hours a week working on a story/report. Assignments are to be emailed to the teacher 2 days before class by 5pm CST. LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE EVALUATED. ** The student must have access to a printer in order to print out sources for units 4 & 6 and various documents sent by the teacher.Assessment
Elementary and Jr. High students assignments will be randomly chosen and evaluated by the teacher. The teacher will review the compositions and supply feedback in written or verbal form. The IEW composition checklist and/or six trait assessment will be utilized to evaluate the compositions. High School students assignments will be randomly chosen and evaluated by the teacher. The IEW composition checklist and/or six trait assessment will be utilized to evaluate the compositions. ** If the parents of high school students would like a grade, please state so in a private email to the teacher. Fall semester Unit 1 – 2 Note Making and Outline, Writing from Notes (All grade levels) • Students will learn how to create a keyword outline (KWO) • Students will learn how to retell the story from the KWO • Students will learn IEW stylistic techniques Unit 3 Retelling Narrative Stories (All grade levels) • Student will identify the important components of a fictional story • Students will rewrite a story from the story sequence chart • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Unit 4 Summarizing a Reference (Jr. High level) • Students will learn the unit 4 summarizing a reference structural model • Students will learn how to use the topic-clincher rule • Students will learn how to limit facts • Students will learn how to write a KWO by looking for important or interesting facts Unit 5 Writing from Pictures (High School level) • Students will learn to ask questions about pictures in order to obtain ideas for writing • Students will learn to write a KWO from pictures • Students will learn to write a 3-paragraph story from the KWO • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Spring Semester Unit 6 Summarizing Multiple References (All grade levels) • Students will learn Unit 6 Summarizing Multiple References structural model • Students will learn to identify various topics related to one subject • Students will learn to write source outlines about a single topic from multiple references • Students will learn to write a fuse outline from multiple outlines • Students will create a report from the fuse outline • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Unit 7 Inventive Writing (All grade levels) • Students will learn the importance of asking questions • Students will learn the parts of the introduction and concluding paragraphs • Students will learn to write a KWO for three body paragraphs, an introduction, and a conclusion • Students will learn to write a 5-paragraph composition from the KWO Unit 8 Formal Essay • Jr. High students will learn how to write a persuasive essay • Jr. High students will learn why it is important to researh information • Jr. H. students will review the basic parts of an introduction and conclusion paragraph • Jr. High students will learn the proper structure for multi-paragraph essay • Jr. High students will learn to cite information found in reliable sources • Jr. High students will write a 5-paragraph composition • Students will apply stylistic techniques learned to assignments Unit 9 Formal Critique (High School only) • Students will learn the format of a Formal Critique structural model • Students will learn vocabulary which works well in a formal critique • Students will learn to use the Unit 3 Story Sequence Chart to write the body paragraph(s) • Students will learn the components of an introduction and conclusion paragraph used in formal critiques • Students will write a formal critique Note: All final assignments must be typed doubled spaced, Times New Roman #12 font. Assignments must be emailed to the teacher 1-2 days before class. Assignments will have due dates. Late assignments will NOT be evaluated. Note 2: The Spring semester is for students who have completed the Fall semester units. Exception may be made if the student has had prior experience with IEW curriculum. The student writing sample will have to be reviewed by the teacher. Note 3: Each learner experience will be different, and I will work toward improving weaknesses. Note 4: Lessons will be presented for Jr. High Level (age 11-13), and High School (14-18).
