Homework
1-2 hours per week. Usually I will give exercises customized to the student's skill level, focus, and learning style, with a specific number of repetitions assigned per practice session. I like to empower students with having a part in the decision-making process, so with my help they will usually decide on the number of repetitions and practice sessions they will commit to. I like to communicate this to the parent so they can have a part in making sure the student follows through on their commitment.Class Experience
I will teach a wide variety of topics, depending on the student's goals, skill level, and needs, including tuning the guitar, electric and acoustic guitar chords and techniques, strumming, reading guitar tablature and chord charts, soloing and improvisation, fingerpicking, speed picking, jazz chords and playing styles, bending notes, hammer-ons, pulloffs, slides, and much more.
Learning Goals
Students will level up their guitar playing no matter what skill level they start lessons at, and will also gain good practice habits that they can leverage toward their own independent growth.
Other Details
Pre-Requisites
I teach all skills levels, so no previous knowledge required. I can even pick up where a previous teacher left off and continue promoting forward growth.
Electric guitar players will need to have a working amplifier and guitar cable.
Supply List
I provide all source material, mostly in the form of PDF files, which are often customized to the student's preferences (for example, customized chord fingerings we decide on in the lesson to work best with their hand size and type).
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been teaching music, singing, and playing the guitar professionally for over 30 years, and have taught thousands of students. I studied classical guitar at Kennesaw State University, and jazz guitar at Georgia State University. I started teaching exclusively online in 2018, and can teach with a variety of camera angles and online resources.
I teach a wide variety of styles, including rock, jazz, metal, classical, country, 80s rock, classic rock, funk, and more. I also teach a wide variety of specialized playing techniques, like fingerpicking, improvisation, developing speed in scales and chords, singing while playing an instrument, playing and learning music by ear, songwriting, and understanding music theory on a practical level.
I can teach anyone from the absolute "square one" beginner who has never played a guitar or other instrument before, to a musician of any skill level who wants to take it to the next level or get back on track with their playing.
