6 live meetings
3 in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Students will be able to set goals for the number of pieces and specific techniques they would like to complete in a week and will be given helpful practice tips on how to reach their goals effectively.Assessment
When a student can successfully play a piece or a scale with the proper technique and expression, they can move on to a new piece or scale (technical exercise). They can work on as many pieces and scales at a time as they want.Class Experience
This class will enable the learner to progress towards specific, individualized goals in their piano playing. They will learn to read music, engage in technical exercises to strengthen hand dexterity and flexibility, and learn songs of their choosing. Lessons will be taught through explanation, demonstration, and interactive activities which may include clapping exercises, playbacks, composition exercises, interactive games, listening activities, and music related stories. Learners will be able to ask questions and request help on learning concepts as needed. There is no pre-required knowledge needed to attend this class. Lesson topics will be learner directed based on that learner's goals in learning the piano. They may bring lesson books or sheet music that they want to learn or need assistance with. I can also provide handouts and sample songs to teach piano basics if needed. I will recommend various lesson books according to your student's individual goals. A variety of methods will be offered and you will be able to choose your preference. Lessons usually start with warm up activities such as scales and then a review of previous material that has been practiced throughout the week. This is followed by the teaching of new material or concepts as well as helpful tips on improving techniques or musical expression. This can be through the use of a method book or through preferred pieces that have been previously chosen. Then we do theory or rhythm activities together to cement the concepts learned followed by a game to bring everything together.
Learning Goals
Students will learn the basics of how to play piano, including note reading, how to count rhythms accurately, how to have proper posture and technique while playing, how to develop technical skills, and how to increase musicality and range of expression. My main goal for each student is to ignore their love of playing music!
