Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Have you ever wanted to play fiddle, violin, or mandolin, but never knew where to start? Do you have trouble learning correct technique, practice strategies, or struggle finding good repertoire to learn? Well, you've come to the right place!

I am a young and passionate teacher, committed to helping you improve on your instrument and achieve your goals! Many students comment on my patience, communication skills, and flexibility as a teacher.

In our first lesson, I will likely ask you to demonstrate your level to me, either by telling me or showing me what you know. I will use this to better understand your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. You can expect to come away from our first lesson with some learning materials, a plan for going forward, and an encouraging start to our journey as musicians together!

Here are some topics I often cover in my lessons:

- Expanding repertoire - Learning new songs can be the most fun and encouraging part to learning a new instrument! No matter your level, I can help you expand your repertoire based on your interests and goals.

- Ear training - Not everyone is born with a good ear, but the good news is that is something that can be developed! Through a variety of games and exercises, I can help you improve your ear in order to gain a deeper understanding of the music you listen to and play.

- Music reading - For those that are interested in reading music, it can be a very useful skill for expanding your horizons, and playing different styles of music!

- Improvising - Although intimidating at first to some people, improvising can be freeing, exciting, and extremely useful in gaining musicianship.

- Jamming - Using all of the skills mentioned above, plus some general knowledge of musical structures, you could be ready to join a jam session. This is something I love discussing with my students and getting them to the point of being able to play music with others.

Music theory - A general understanding of music theory is super important to help understand the structure of music and how it all comes together! This can start from the very basics of notes and chords, and go all the way to the circle of fifths, key signatures, and modes.

Technique - The techniques involved in playing an instrument can be difficult to grasp at first, but once you learn them, they make play a whole lot easier! I will be there to make sure you're on the right track and give you pointers to improve!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone! My name is Alani, and I'm excited to be teaching here on Outschool!

I teach lots of different music classes, including violin, mandolin, fiddle, and music theory! I love teaching students of all levels, from total beginner to advanced, and all ages. I am also an ESL/EFL (English as a second/foreign language) teacher. I love teaching people of all ages, but I have a special place in my heart for teaching kids!

I am passionate about teaching music and English online in one-on-one and small group contexts, and have done so on a private basis as well as worked with other online learning platforms.

I believe that everyone's connection to music is different, which means their goals and values will be different too! Everyone should be able to learn and achieve their goals along with a supportive and positive teacher, like me! This applies to learning any subject, but can be especially important when it comes to music or language, which are both challenging subjects. My students have told me that I am a good communicator, and that I am very patient and meet students where they are.

Aside from being a lover of music, I also am a fanatic of languages! Currently I study Spanish and Japanese, and I also studied Hebrew for a few months. I love the feeling of learning new things!
