Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Fluency can be fun! In this one-time class, learners will enjoy reading out loud by practicing their chosen character's lines in this comical and fictional Reader's Theater script featuring Santa's elves and a whimsical gingerbread character who try to cheer up their elf friend who has lost his excitement for Christmas. The story is created by the instructor and is titled “One Grumpy Elf”. In using Reader’s Theater as a strategy, students do not need to memorize their part; they need only to reread it a few times, thus developing their fluency skills. Reading fluency is much more than just reading quickly, and Reader's Theater is a welcomed break from practicing fluency passages. To be a fluent reader, students must develop accuracy (correct word pronunciation), rate (appropriate speed- reading like you're having a conversation), and prosody (expression while reading with the correct rhythm, tone, pitch, and pauses). Fluency enhances reading comprehension, builds confidence, and makes reading that much more enjoyable! Students will enjoy bringing their character to life and interacting with peers while reading this entertaining Reader's Theater. The learners will also be amused by the animations that occur on their screen as they read through the events in script/story.

This is a timeline for our activities during our class:
1. We will warm up our Reading brains with age-appropriate phonemic awareness exercises.
2. Vocabulary- We will learn and practice examples of the new vocabulary words in this story.
3. Let's Act it Out!- We will choose our parts/ characters and begin reading! With time allowing we will do repeated readings or switch parts and re-read the script.

I will post the script in the classroom if your learner would prefer to have a printed copy to read from. Otherwise, it will be shown on their screen and they can read from their device. Either option will be perfectly fine!
Learning Goals
Students will read accurately using phrasing and expression during this comical Reader's Theater based on solving fictional problems that Santa's elves encounter. Students will learn and use vocabulary words within this seasonal Reader's Theater.
