What's included

1 live meeting
2 in-class hours per week
Homework
1 hour per week. Learners will be sent an email each week asking them to contribute to the class by creating something new and interesting for the world. They can answer these questions briefly or do some creative writing on the subject. They should understand that not all their ideas may be excepted because I have a responsibility to create an entertaining and safe class for all, but if their ideas are genuine, I will certainly do my best to incorporate them into the storyline. They should not create an ice cream mountain if they would not have any interest in going there.

Class Experience

Once Upon a Time in Fairyland is a 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, Learner driven, "Sandbox" adventure. This is an on-going gaming club, and Learners can join or miss a class without fear of losing out or being left behind. The world will start as a blank map and Learners will contribute to how the world is build. Each week the Learners will engage in a Dungeons and Dragons adventure that I have sketched together. During the game each player will be asked to contribute their own imagination to the crafting of the game, be it naming NPCs, Locations, or other devices. The characters will also build up "ink points" as they adventure and be able to use those points to create directly into the plot of the story. These points will be obtained by "inking (destroying) monsters" and other rewards. The points cannot be used to harm others, but could be used to suddenly find that torch that the character forgot to pack, or with enough points a surrounded group of characters might find a hidden secret door that leads them to safety?

Each week the Learner will also be sent an email in which they are given even more ability to add their imaginations to the game, as I ask them questions about what they would like to see in the upcoming games. I will take these ideas and refine them into the storyline of this whimsical fairyland that we are creating filled with zany characters and fantastical locations. Learners are also free to submit ideas on their own. The idea is to get those imaginations going that can lead to creative writing during out-of-class hours.

The Dungeon Master reserves the right to allow creations, disallow creations or modify creations for the entertainment and safety of everyone.

This class is fine for inexperienced players of Dungeons and Dragons, but Learners without any knowledge of the game should attend one of my classes that teach how to play Dungeons and Dragons first. This class is auto-schedule enabled, so if the timing listed for the class is not what works for you, then feel free to ask for a class that fits your schedule.

The Classes will run as follows

Week of Oct 11 ,2022: Introduction of Learners. This will be a session zero type class in which we will create characters and discuss the rules for creating and what is expected of everyone. I will explain the concepts of the class.

Week of Oct 18, 2022: Introduction of new Learners. This class we will begin the adventure and concentrate on the creation of a local enviroment for our game

Week of Oct 25, 2022: Introduction of new Learners. Learner directed class

Week of Nov 1, 2022: Introduction of new Learners. Learners will continue to direct the class each session in the continuing weeks

Again this is an on-going class structure so Learners can miss a class without fear of being left behind as each week is a new adventure.

The Story thus far, The learners have created a growing world from their imaginations. The ruler of their fairy kingdom, known as the Maze King has been kidnapped and all clues are leading them to a villain from the Candy Kingdom. Why was the Maze King taken? Who is this villian and what dangers wait for the heroes in the Candy Kingdom. The Learners will create as they adventure forward. Won't you join them?
Learning Goals
This form of game play gives the Learner a sense of achievement and control as they collaborate with their peers to create a patch quilt of fantasy.

The Learner will advocate for themselves as they inject their ideas into the fantasy world and story.

The Learner will learn that there are Consequences that result from their actions, and that those consequences need be thought about before the action is taken, not afterward.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
The class is more Learner driven than many classes, as the Learners are creating the story and world around them. I will supervise this class and ensure that it is age appropriate. As this is a Dungeons and Dragons game there is fantasy combat and magic use. Death, however, will not occur in this world, as those that would die are just transformed into a pool of ink that can be gathered by the characters and reimagined into something else later. The Learner's characters may "die" as the result of consequences and the lack of planning, but the learner will be allowed to reimagine their character and continue play. The use of alcohol will also not be used during the game, instead bars will serve coffee and a wild assortment of milkshakes, smoothies and other age-appropriate faire. If at anytime you you have questions please contact me.
Supply List
The Learner will need The Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition Players Handbook or access to a digital version.
They will need a set of polyhedron role-playing dice
pencil and paper.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been playing and game mastering role-playing games for over 40 years. I've gotten very quick on my feet adlibing events during the game, but have been amazed with what the minds of young Learners come up with, I want to take this class and let them lead us to where their imaginations want to take us.
