Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this one-time course, aspiring authors will learn the important skill of collaboration by working together and taking turns with peers. We will create a brand new winter-themed story and then read it at the end of class. Students will practice their participation skills, manners, and critical thinking as we venture into the creative world of storytelling and illustrating! Students will receive a printable PDF copy of the story they helped author in class - a perfect bedtime book that they can be proud of! A Flipbook for on-screen reading will be provided by the teacher as well.

Students will focus on word-building using their own vocabulary as they participate in story creation. If your student can verbalize, s/he can take this course! This writing class focuses on taking the thoughts in our minds and putting them into written form, emphasizing phonetics of each sound as we build words within our story suggested by students themselves. The instructor will guide and prompt students through this creative process, and no supplies are needed by learners (all writing will be done on screen).

Because this course requires collaboration and active participation, students should expect to have microphones and cameras on for the duration of the entire class.

Prerequisites: None. This is a great class for readers of all skill levels.

Bachelor's Degree in English from University of Massachusetts at Lowell
"Education is not the filling of a pot but the lighting of a fire." –W.B. Yeats

Welcome! I'm Rachel Adams, and I am so glad that you've found me on Outschool!

I have spent 7 years in STEM+M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, + Medicine) and 2 years in SpEd (special education) support. I am beginning my 4th year already as an Outschool educator.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Massachusetts at Lowell with my Bachelor's in English. I also hold dual Associate degrees from Stark State College in both Arts & Science. I have classroom experience with K-12 students, and I have worked as a college writing tutor for the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. I have been a business owner/entrepreneur for over 20 years, and I am also a published author and children's book illustrator. I live in the Northeast Ohio snow belt with my family. (United States).

I have a deep connection to the medical field that has spanned over 24 years--medical language is my specialty! As a medical language specialist, I am fluent in medical terminology and have certifications in all clinical specialties as a CHDS-R and CMT-R, and in Ophthalmology as a COA-R. I am an expert in health information integrity. Additionally, I am currently back in school as a grad student, working full-time on my 4th college degree and obtaining my Master's in Nursing (MSN) at Herzing University.

I enjoy guiding adolescents and helping little learners discover what they are passionate about, and also... sometimes even more importantly... what they are not passionate about. As an educator and college & career coach, I recognize the extreme value in figuring out what it is you do NOT want to do for a career, especially when families consider the hefty financial commitments of college. I love nurturing and gently guiding learners through this important process so that they can make good choices, informed decisions, and confidently head in the direction of their dreams.

I encourage a growth mindset in all of my students, and collaboration & project-based learning have a place in all of my classes. I look forward to teaching literature & writing classes, college & career readiness, as well as classes that focus on debate skills and medical terminology by specialty. Social clubs have become my niche here on Outschool. I love working with the little munchkins--all the way down to age 5--as well as with young men & women who are close to turning their tassels and heading off to college soon!

Creating high-quality, visually appealing content is extremely important to me as your instructor.

Thank you for taking the time to read my teacher profile. If you have any questions, I welcome you to reach out to me.

Outschool is an amazing community of learners. I am incredibly happy to be teaching here, and I'm so glad that you've joined me!

I hope to see you in class soon.
