Class Experience and Class Time Availability:

This class is an ongoing class that meets once a week. This class is for English as a Second Language students ages 7-12. The teacher possesses their 120-hour TESOL certification and has been teaching ESL to children from ages 4-15 years old for the past 5 years. Each class will be 25 minutes long and we will be using interactive slides and working on phonics sounds and vocabulary words. As well, we will be focusing on reading and grammar skills, and will learn to create full sentence phrases. The teacher will introduce phonics by using flash cards or a whiteboard, and will have the student repeat several times. We will also practice spelling skills. In addition, to practicing English, the student will also have a practice with basic math skills, if time allows.
The teacher will use TPR as much as possible to help enforce learning and the student will be encouraged to copy back. This will be taught by the I do, we do, you do method. The teacher will make corrections when a student makes a mistake. There will be role play in some lessons to help enforce sentences and general responses. If the student struggles, then we will review until the material is mastered. When a student shows strong skills, the teacher will do extended questions and expand the material.

During the first lesson, the teacher will perform a placement test for all new students. Please contact the tutor to explain the current level of English of your child or your child's English skills. For younger students, we will have a placement test for phonics and reading. The teacher will be using an interactive program for younger learners, such a Splashlearn or Lalilo, that will help determine their level in phonics and reading skills. We will then have a variety of easy level classes for reading and comprehension using a variety of workbooks. We will be using Raz-Plus for reading placements. For older students in need of grammar and composition help, that is available as well.

If the student is in need of working on more material outside of class. The teacher will assign homework on Splashlearn, Khan Academy Kids, and Lalilo. Please know that you will have a create logins to access assignments, but doing these projects and assigned assignments will help enforce learning. Currently, courses will be for beginner and intermediate levels ONLY. Soon, other lessons will be offered to help older students with more advanced skills to practice and focus on free talk conversations, reading, and everyday life skills. For older students we may use Duolingo Classroom for homework and practice. Again,, please note that the parent will have a create a log in for this service to access assignments. Lastly, there will be feedback provides after every class via the conversations tab and the classroom board.

Each week's lesson will be planned accordingly (order of subjects may change during each course to allow variety):

Week 1 (or first meeting) - Placement lesson (grammar, reading, phonics, word study phonics, spelling, writing-- all based on level)
Week 2 - Review of last week's material and introduce Grammar lesson 2, Phonics (or Word Study), Spelling, reading if time allows)
