Are we alone? Scientists have been searching for life beyond our planet for many years now. In the past 5 years alone, huge discoveries have been made on planets like Mars and Venus to suggest that there might be life beyond Earth. Rockets, satellites, probes, and rovers are gathering information to help us better understand the potential evidence for life. In this class, we will take a close look at images and other information gathered by scientists to see what we know and make predictions about what is not yet known. Students will be immersed in the science of extraterrestrial life to learn about what scientists have discovered so far. The class includes many visuals to help students understand the topic at hand. Students will learn and use physics concepts such as organic biology, geology, and remote sensing throughout the lesson and will make conclusions about the existence of extraterrestrial life. This course is on a specialized topic within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics. The course will stray away from complex mathematics and concepts to be more accessible to students of all levels. Throughout the lesson, students will gain confidence in skills that are applicable to all fields of science such as questioning, predicting, observing, and critical thinking.

Teacher expertise and credentials
This is an adaptation of a lesson I taught for 8th graders for two years at a college preparatory school. The foundation of this unit is based on research conducted by leading scientists in the field of astrophysics. The course is then enhanced with age-appropriate material designed to be accessible for teenagers and address a wide variety of learning styles.
