Have you ever wondered what your pet would say if they could talk? Yeah, me too! I also wonder what kind of stories they would tell about my family. I really wonder what secrets they will spill! I have pondered what my goldfish thought about me trying to train him when I was a little girl. Or what my old hamster thought about the camera in his cage on Saturdays during the book club meetings? I’m certain my dog Norman is officially tired of following me around the house and I’m betting they wish I would sit still. I can imagine he would have some truly wild and likely confused thoughts about all the things that happen in my house. He probably thinks I talk to myself all day long. He might be right. Together in this writing workshop we might be able to imagine what’s on your pets' minds. I would love to explore the hilarious stories just waiting to be told. So grab your furry or scaly loved one, a notebook, your favorite pen and let's create those humorous stories. This workshop’s focus will be on using descriptive vocabulary and using the “first-person” (pet) style of writing (time to pretend to be an animal). We’ll be crafting what I’ve coined as “spicy sentences” that will allow the reader to see the movie that is playing in the young author's mind. Workshop activities: Doodle outline Narrator profile (Pet) Describe the setting (home, dog park, a dog beach, neighborhood, cage, tank) Write parts of the story (some students complete their story in class) This workshop is great for a future author, budding writers, and the reluctant writers due to the unusual writing methods I use in class. By using doodles, descriptive vocabulary and first-person narration, students will enhance their creativity and storytelling abilities. The class is designed to be fast-paced and interactive, making it perfect for young writers. Your child will not only improve their writing but also enjoy the process of creating humorous and imaginative stories. Why Your Child Should Take This Writing Workshop: This fun workshop uses an unusual writing method to engage students and spark their creativity. By imagining and narrating stories from their pets’ perspectives, children will find writing to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. The class helps fulfill common core standards in writing, including: Text Types and Purposes: Students will write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences. Production and Distribution of Writing: The workshop encourages planning and organizing ideas, which are essential skills for producing clear and coherent writing. Build and Present Knowledge: Students will recall information about their pets and use it to enhance their stories, fostering memory and critical thinking. While we won’t be editing in class, students will have the opportunity to share a reading selection from the story they have written during the 60-minute session. By the end of the workshop, your child will have improved their writing abilities and gained confidence in their storytelling skills. ∆ This workshop can be repeated at any time to create new stories. ∆
