Word problems can be tough! In this class we will learn strategies and skills to make mathematical word problems with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division more manageable. In each class meeting we will play interactive games, use real-life examples, and complete practice problems as a group to develop a solid foundation in how to accurately complete these types of word problems. In week one, we will focus on word problems with addition. Using the "Draw a picture" method, students will learn how to accurately complete a variety of addition word problems. In week two, we will explore subtraction word problems using logic and the "Work backward" method. In week three, students will work together using the skills they have learned in previous weeks to master a variety of multiplication word problems. In week four, we will end with discovering how to break down word problems requiring division to solve. We will also do a review of all concepts covered in this class to solidify the skills they have developed. Students must already know how to read, add, subtract, and multiply. Division words problems covered in this class will be introductory division concepts.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Jessica Bryant and I teach elementary and middle school math classes in a variety of topics. I am a former STEM enrichment teacher with a current Multiple Subject teaching credential in California with an emphasis in mathematics. I have experience teaching 3rd and 4th grade, as well as middle school home school curriculum in all core subjects. I have tutored elementary to high school aged students in math, improving their understanding and confidence in themselves as a learner. I also am a former competitive gymnast and coached through my college years! I enjoy teaching in a fun, relational, and hands-on way that encourages student involvement in the learning process. I believe building a firm foundation with math concepts creates the confidence a learner needs to continue in their education with success. In my experience, the best way to do this is to have fun while learning! Using a variety of hands-on approaches, I engage the learners in discussion to explore new concepts in a way students can relate. I also teach reading, writing, and grammar skills. I know without impeccable communication skills, students will have a harder time learning nearly any topic! I believe learning should never stop with age, continuing in a life-long journey of growth and exploration that I hope to share with your learner during their time in my classes
