Explore Coping Skills, Black History and Current Events in one Truly Unique Music Appreciation Class

Class experience

US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
Using the overall theme: “Oh, Freedom!”, students will learn how one can be free within themselves while working within an immovable framework of circumstance, rules or injustices.

Throughout the process, participants will learn valuable coping and self-soothing skills that are easily transferable to their everyday lives. They will cultivate empathy for others and explore emotion by using visual art.
As an African- American, I have always had a passion for Black History. As a trained singer and musician, I've also had a passion for several music genres, from Gospel to Opera.
This course began as a 10-minute History of Spirituals in word and song, much like Jimmy Fallon's History of Rap series. From those humble beginnings, came an Arts Residency at a middle school in Southern NJ for which a 10-part curriculum was written in only 48 hours!
Since then, some manner of this course has been taught to students of all ages, all over the world, in-person and here on Outschool.
Homework Offered
Students will have homework assigned in the following lessons: Lesson 1: brainSTORM (visual arts project) Lesson 3: Vocabulary wordfind and crossword puzzle Lesson 6: Code-A-Quilt Project (visual arts) Lesson 7: Sing a New Song - musical composition
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Pupils will be evaluated via various participatory activities - oral and kinetic; as well as written and creative homework exercises. No prerequisites required.
Grades Offered
 1 file available upon enrollment
Visual arts and song writing materials may incur additional costs. PDF materials (patterns, worksheets, templates) to be presented and provided by the teacher at no additional cost.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
This course has several inherent references of a Biblical nature. The references are not presented to convey religious doctrine but to help students understand how these words were used as lyrics to communicate covertly in code.
Provided PDF materials will need to be printed and compiled before the first session of class. All independent assignments must be submitted by the due dates (and times). This may be done via screenshot, scanner or scanning app and submitted by Outschool message.
