Class Experience

I am a dive guide, scuba diving instructor, and marine biologist. I will be taking students on a journey into the blue in a fun and meaningful way while exploring different marine ecosystems, learning about biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors, discussing the importance of biodiversity, a healthy ocean, and conservation efforts to protect and restore the ocean.

This is a combined scuba diving and marine biology class, so each week we will also be going into depth about what it takes to be a scuba diver.

This is an 8-week course. Every week, students will learn about a new marine ecosystem in sequence as follows:
1. Week of April 19th - Introduction to SCUBA and Importance of the Ocean
2. Week of April 26th - Coral Reefs and Scuba Diving Equipment
3. Week of May 3rd - Deep Seas and Physics and Chemistry of Diving
4. Week of May 10 - Frozen Seas and Physiology of Diving
5. Week of May 17th - Kelp Forests, Seagrasses, and Plastic Pollution
6. Week of May 24th - Intertidal Zone and Human Impacts on the Ocean
7. Week of May 31st - Ocean Optimism
8. Week of June 7th - Summary and Trivia Game

This course is engaging and interactive. Students are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts and experiences throughout the lesson.

This is a multidisciplinary and interactive class, we will learn and discuss topics of physics, chemistry, oceanography, marine biology, history, and sustainability. Each class will be structured similarly consisting of lectures, storytelling, discussions, virtual trips, and activities.

Students should have a basic understanding of food webs and the 5 basic needs of survival. This course is perfect for learners who love the ocean, want to learn more about scuba diving, and/or are interested in being an underwater naturalist.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their understanding of different marine ecosystems, learn how to identify key species of plants and animals, and learn what it takes to become a scuba diver. Throughout this class, students will gain an appreciation for the ocean, and understand the different ecosystem services the ocean provides to us.
