Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
These animals may be named after foods, but they would make terrible snacks! In this class, we will study ten marine animals that are named after foods. We will learn the characteristics, lifestyles, and ecology of each of these animals and what makes them so unique!

The animals we study include...
1) Chocolate chip sea stars
2) Fried egg jellyfish
3) Orange-peel doris
4) Lettuce sea slug
5) Cauliflower jellyfish
6) Pineapple fish
7) Pancake batfish
8) Garlic bread sea cucumber
9) Potato grouper
10) Lemon shark

*Exact animals covered subject to change as I am continually editing and improving my classes.

This class is lecture-style with slides and photos, but highly interactive. Students are encouraged to ask and answer questions, ponder scientific ideas, and discuss with their classmates. Students may participate via video, audio, the chat room, or may just sit back and enjoy!

At the end of class, we will discuss, "What yummy name would YOU give an animal?"
Learning Goals
Students will increase their knowledge of zoology by using the above animals as case studies. Students will be able to name and describe these animals and their unique characteristics. Students will apply the concept of adaptation to consider how these characteristics help animals survive. As a side effect, students may become highly enthusiastic about learning science!
