Come dance the story of the Nutcracker in this one-week, 3 day camp for the beginning Ballet dancer. Class Flow Description: 1) WELCOME Come to class and meet all your new friends in camp. We will learn each other's names and share what we know about the Nutcracker story. 2) IMAGINATION EXERCISE Each Day we will pretend and imagine a portion of the Nutcracker story. DAY 1 We begin in Clara's home preparing for a big party. We will pretend and imagine coming to the party, receiving a beautiful Nutcracker from Uncle Drosselmeyer, and enjoying the big party. DAY 2 We pickup our story as Clara awakens in the night after the party, and encounters a battle between Clara's beloved Nutcracker and the Rat King. In the end Clara throws her shoe at the rat King, and the Nutcracker wins the battle. Clara and the Nutcracker prince travel through the beautiful winter snow to the land of sweets. DAY 3 We finish our story as Clara and the Prince arrive in the land of sweets. Clara meets all different sweets as they dance for her and introduce themselves. Then she and the prince dance a beautiful dance together before she finally returns home to her family. 3) DANCE LESSON Each day we will learn a fun beginning Ballet routine to the music from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. Each day and each camp will teach new dances to different portions of the Nutcracker including: The Party Scene and Land of the Sweets 4) GAME Each day we will end our dance instruction with a fun freeze dance game. Each time the music stops we will freeze, and then we will become a new character from the Nutcracker. Day 1: Party Girl, Party Boy, Party Parent, Clara, Drosselmeyer Day 2: Mice, Soldier, Snowflake, Angel Day 3: Candy Cane, Mother Ginger, Sugar Plum Fairy *When the game is over, we will sit to practice some light stretching and get ready for our craft-time. 5) CRAFT Each day we will end our lesson with a fun craft. Parental Guidance
Prep for you class! Take note of the things listed below to ensure the best learning experience:
- Be sure to check the supply list for craft portions of this camp. Many of the supplies are likely things you already have in your home, but there are 3 pages to print attached to the classroom page. Please be sure to print these before the start of camp. It may be a good idea to gather the supplies in a bin/box to make it easy to grab each day for camp.
**Scissors are used in these crafts. Please monitor your child during the lesson and provide age-appropriate materials for them. If you feel you child is not ready to use scissors independently, please plan to help them during these portions of the class time.
- Class will begin promptly at the designated start time. Be sure to log in a little early to avoid technical issues. In order to provide good teaching practices, the instructor will not be able to help you with individual technology concerns.
- Students should set up for class in an open space. They will need room to move around without bumping into any furniture or large objects. It is also a good idea to remove toys or other clutter from the dancing area. Legos/Barbie shoes hurt to step upon and books are easy to slip on. So be sure their area is safe to move around in.
- This class can be learned on a soft or hard floor surface (carpet, tile, wood, etc). However, be sure that the floor is not too slick where your child could easily fall.
- Students are encouraged to use Ballet shoes for this class. However, these are not required. Bare feet would also be appropriate.
- Students should pull all hair up and away from their face and secure it with a hair tie or other hair accessories.
- This class will include warm up, cool down, stretching, and injury prevention. As with any exercise class, parents are encouraged to monitor student activity. Please note that you are solely responsible for your child's safety and well-being. The instructor will not be responsible for any injury in or outside of class time.
- Feel free to keep water nearby for your child. Students will be given short breaks during the lesson, but feel free to take a break at any time as needed. This is your class time and it should be comfortable for you.
- Please note that encouragement and praise are the most important part of the learning process. You, as a parent, have the wonderful ability to influence your child's excitement while learning something new.
Encourage your child throughout their class, and remind them that learning new things can take time/practice. I will encourage this too, but sometimes hearing if from parents can reinforce comfortable learning environments.

Teacher expertise and credentials
My name is Mrs Laura and I’ve been working as an educator and dance instructor for over 10 years. I was trained classically for over 14 years in many styles including Ballet, Pointe, Modern, Jazz and Tap. With a college degree in Sociology and Education, my unique teaching style emphasizes creating clear, concise patterns for students to learn dance steps quickly and easily. I like to explain my dance steps in ways that reinforce auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning. This alleviates frustration and makes learning fun and exciting. I also believe the words of Aristotle who says, “Education of the mind, without education of the heart, is no education at all.” So, all of my classes are filled with lots of social and emotional support. I want all of my students to walk away from my classes excited, confident and ready to share what they have learned with others. This is what makes learning to dance so fun!
