Class Experience

The learners will first be shown the full nursery rhyme before given the basic vocabulary for the lesson. We will have 1 minute of hand stretching before starting. The learners will move as a group as we go through each part of the song together. I don’t want the learners to just copy and do what I say but know why it’s an important part of American Sign Language. We will learn the importance of LOCATIVES (locations of objects) in ASL and how to utilize directional verbs. It is important to visualize an object. ASL is not 2D nor should expressing it. It is important for learners of ASL to understand ASL is not English. Grow in your ASL expressions by learning a nursery rhyme. After the students learn the rhyme and vocabulary, we will have SIGN FUN using the vocabulary to form a new ending or forming an alternative ernative story. This process will emphasis and encourage fun with American Sign Language.

Learning Goals

The learners will understand how to utilize space when telling a story and be able to visualize object in a 3D manner. Learners will know how to set the scene before showing the action, to communicate the subject and object. Students will have a full grasp on the vocabulary signs, a fun understanding to directional verbs, the confidence to show their friends and family a fun story and vital skills. Language is Life! But a visual language is a Great Life!

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am offering this class because learning ASL has become commercialized only focusing on the match up of words to signs. ASL is a real language and needs to be treated with respect and not as entertainment. As a 10 year learning, I have formal education and the passion to teach students from the perspective of a lover of culture and language. I graduated from college and became a full time ASL interpreter that has worked in different fields and been involved in ASL acquisition in students. Without gaining an appreciation of the culture, it just becomes appropriation
