In this fun one-time class, learners will engage with the characters from Numberblocks to learn about fact families. Taking two numbers from 1-10, students will explore their relationship to each other through addition and its inverse, subtraction. For example, for family 3, 5 and 8: 3 + 5 =8 5 + 3 = 8 8 – 3 =5 8 – 5 = 3 After working with math link cubes in the familiar Numberblock style to establish the correct answers to a given fact family, children will have the opportunity to practise using a ‘My Turn, Our Turn, Your Turn’ method for learning new math skills and repeating the number sentence created with the chosen Numberblocks. They will then have the chance to pick their own two families of numbers to explore their pattern. Learners can record their answers on a fact family sheet available to print after enrolment. Learners joining this class should already be able to count to 20 and be familiar with performing addition and subtraction within 20. Math link cubes/Numberblock branded cubes are not required to participate in class. Upon enrolment you may print Numberblocks 1-20 to cut out to use in class or bring a group of small objects to be used such as dried beans or pasta, plastic or wooden blocks, breakfast cereal loops, small toy cars etc. Numberblocks 11-20 may additionally be printed if your child is a visual learner and it is helpful for them to see and handle the larger numbers made when adding numbers under 10, e.g. 8 + 4 = 12 A fact family recording sheet will also be provided (optional print- off).
Learning Goals
Students will refresh their knowledge of simple addition and subtraction through the manipulation of concrete objects. They will learn about fact families and how the relationship between three numbers forms a pattern. Students will also learn that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.
