Class Experience

Learners will improve their comprehension of reading a historical fiction novel by being provided a variety of different reading strategies to focus on each week while they read their novel independently.
With respect to my qualifications to teach this sensitive subject matter, my own education has included several history courses that covered this topic. In addition to that, part of the middle school history and language arts curriculum includes units on the Holocaust. I have been co-teaching those classes for over 17 years. Each year we have numerous meetings with other faculty members who also teach those classes to ensure that the Holocaust unit is taught with fidelity. And finally, there have been several years where our school has had a Holocaust survivor come and speak to our students and staff which furthers our understanding.
Learners will be assigned a certain number of chapters of reading before the next meeting-usually four chapters but the last week will be five chapters.
"Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry needs to be either checked out from the library or bought before the class begins. We will also be using Kahoot, quizzizz, and Blooket for review each week.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
The learners progress will be assessed through informal weekly discussions as well as by looking at the learners progress on the weekly game that is provided to ensure that comprehension is happening.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
First, let me explain that Number the Stars is a book that talks about the Nazi occupation in Denmark. However, it does not go into detail of the atrocities that were committed during this time period. Rather it describes the characters fear of the soldiers, food needing to be rationed and two families, one trying to help the other escape to Sweden.
