45 mins in-class hours per weekClass Experience
In this class, the teacher will focus on completing 3 different tasks with the students each week. The weekly class schedule will be the following: Day 1 - Number Talk Day 2. Problem Solving Day 3 - Addition/Subtraction Fact Fluency Game Students will participate in a "number talk," that allows for children to complete the same addition/subtraction problems in a variety of ways. Students will be guided to share strategies with their peers, which enables each child to see that there's more than one way to solve the same problem. This adds new ideas into the mind of each student, so that students learn to become more flexible with their math strategies. Following our "number talk," students will then complete a word problem. Students will be guided through the problem gradually, and then eventually released to complete the problem on their own. Students will have different sets of numbers to use within the same problem, so they can practice being flexible with numbers within the same context. Students will have an opportunity to share their strategies with their classmates once the problem has been completed. These problems will always be one of the problem types addressed in the Common Core Standards for second and third grade addition and subtraction word problems. At the conclusion of each class, students will be taught a math fact fluency game. This will be a fun and engaging way to practice addition and subtraction facts, instead of simply using flash cards, drilling, and practicing. This will also provide parents with new ideas for ways they can practice math facts at home as well. New content and problems will be taught and used each week this class is taught! Students can enroll each week, and be taught new problems, strategies, and ideas within this framework.
