During this class, learners will enter a fun and safe space to express thoughts on various mathematical prompts covering real-world topics. The structure of this class naturally invites participants to share their math thinking. During the Number Talk section, learners will be prompted by a question from a display/slides or a math picture/model. Students will strengthen mental math skills and explore and discover math strategies by speaking and listening through group discussions and using reasoning.
I have engaged learners in Number Talks and Number Strings for over 7 years. Using an open forum structure has enabled mastery of skills, and growth-mindset practices and has proven to influence autonomy. I have observed an increase in a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts on a concrete level from kindergarteners to third graders who have participated in a routine with number talks and number strings. These academic routines have equipped learners with effective and efficient tools to use during times of independent or asynchronous math time.
A one-page hand-out highlighting the Number Talk and Number Strings discussion protocol will be provided when you join the class. It is highly encouraged to be placed in a place visible to the learner as a reminder of how best to participate in this class.
