Students are not to write anything down or use calculators or other tools. The teacher will make notes and write things for the class to see, however, learners are to do all work mentally. In Number Talks classes, we spend several minutes (or more) working on one problem. We may only cover a few problems per class session based on the depth of the conversation. One problem can take 5-10 minutes to discuss. Please be sure your learner has a quiet, calm environment with no distractions so they may focus on their personal method of working through the problem. For the fifth-grade class, questions might look like: ~39-27 ~45+28 ~32 divided by 16 ~16x8 ~ 18 dots and discuss breakdown of arrays Learners will complete the shown problem on their own, mentally. Learners can choose any mental strategy. The class will then come together and discuss different strategies. Number Talk sessions are intended to be 5-15 minutes. After we complete our Number Talk session, we will move on to some other grade-level appropriate problems. After a few problems, we will then move to a different grade-level math activity. The topics may be related at times, other times they will not be related. Questions might look like: ~How can I make $3 using just coins? ~If I am drinking a glass of water, what words might I use to describe how much water I have? ~How do I draw a picture of a fraction such as 1/4? Class Norms: This is a calm-paced discussion. We use a lot of wait time to allow thinking. We respect others' voices and allow them to speak their methods of the problem. We use quiet communication in the private chatbox to allow think time. Spelling does not matter. We value mistakes. We learn and grow from mistakes and understand that is a part of being a mathematician.
