Class Experience

During this course, students will play with numbers to build their number fluency and number sense. The more students play with numbers the more they start to see patterns. As their fluency grows, students effortlessly begin applying those skills and patterns when working on more complex mathematical concepts they learn throughout the year.

Each lesson starts with clear expectations and a discussion to build a kind, encouraging community. Lessons also include games, mental math, puzzles, and discussion. The only things students will need are a pencil, paper, and a mind ready to grow!

It is recommended that students know, if not all, most of their multiplication facts (1-10). Activities and games will focus around building and strengthening addition and multiplication skills, as well as using them to help with fluency with division and subtraction.

Although this course only meets once, I encourage students to take as many of the sessions as they like! While the format for each session will be the same, the games and puzzles will differ making each session unique. Number fluency is an important skill, and the more we practice the stronger we become!

Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I have taught math to older elementary students for seven years. In this time I have discovered the importance of number fluency and number sense and how much it can help when learning new and more challenging mathematical concepts (i.e. long division, simplifying fractions, converting measurements). Over the years I have continued to fill my teaching tool belt with strategies to help build number sense so students may become more confident with numbers.
