Now That's a Convincing Argument: Understanding Ethos, Pathos, + Logos
In this one-time class, students learn how authors make convincing arguments through the use of the rhetorical strategies ethos, pathos, and logos, and will use this new understanding to evaluate a text for its usage in breakout groups.

When a person writes a letter, speech, or any other type of persuasive text, they often use various rhetorical strategies to help them persuade the reader of their point and perspective. The Ancient Greeks recognized these techniques and gave them names: ethos, pathos, and logos. In this class, I begin by explaining each of these rhetorical appeals, and then we take that newfound understanding and apply it to a short text, Robert F. Kennedy's speech, "On the Death of Martin Luther King,"...
Students will be able to understand the rhetorical strategies ethos, pathos, and logos. They will also be able to identify these devices in a text.
Not only have I been teaching English for over half a decade, but I have also been teaching history just as long. My Bachelor's degree is in Social Studies Education, so I have been trained and have experience with discussing race issues with students, which comes up in Robert F. Kennedy's speech, "On the Death of Martin Luther King." I have also been approved by the College Board to teach and discuss said topics. I approach it in a respectful and objective manner, and I encourage students to do so as well. I also need to note that in the event that a student approaches this topic in a disrespectful and unempathetic manner, I reserve the right to remove them from the Zoom classroom.
Students will be provided with handouts in class.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will check for understanding through informal discussion.
50 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
We will use a copy of Robert F. Kennedy's speech, "On the Death of Martin Luther King" in class.
